During the beginning of his second term, President Obama waded into the gun control debate with a speech and 23 Executive Orders aimed at reducing gun violence. The orders set off alarms for Americans who believe in the Second Amendment and in the Checks and Balances system of government our country has a proud tradition of upholding.

Individually, the orders seem more harmless than they actually are. For example, one tenet of Obama’s plan called for background checks on all guns sales. For this proposal, Obama used math that earned him two Pinocchios from The Washington Post. Anywhere from 80 – 90 percent of gun sales are already using background checks, making this part of his plan both non-scientific and non-useful. The problem arises when the six different orders that increase the data sharing and gathering on gun owners on a federal level are contemplated together. In the end, the federal government could have a full database of every person in the country who has ever purchased a firearm.

The remaining orders included items one might expect the government to already be doing. For example, one order calls for providing law enforcement officers, first responders and school officials with proper training for shooting scenarios. In the same vain, another order calls for the consumer product and Safety Commission to review safety standards for gun locks and safes.

Democrats face obstacles in passing gun control legislation through Congress. Even Vice President Joe Biden, who may have 2016 Presidential aspirations, distanced himself from the President by quoting his grandmother as saying that owning guns was a “non-negotiable” constitutional right. Likewise, getting votes on gun bans or control measures from Democratic senators is not guaranteed, especially from those in pro-gun states like Montana and Alaska. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) also currently has legislation in the works to ban assault weapons.
