Pennsylvania has upped the ante in the gambling industry. State officials say gambling provides new jobs and new revenue while also providing a new and fun entertainment industry for the state. According to the Pennsylvania Gambling Control Board, over 16,000 new jobs have been created by the industry while $6 billion in tax revenue has been collected since legislation was passed about a decade ago to open the gambling industry to Pennsylvania. Tax revenue has been used for the benefit of citizens in ways like developing tourism and lowering property taxes. Eleven casinos across the state play host to classic gambling games such as roulette, craps, card table games, slots as well as horse races. In 2009 Pennsylvania collected the most taxes from casinos of any state in the country, excluding any index of online gambling activities.

Furthermore, critics say this money typically comes, in large part, out of the pockets of lower to middle income gamblers. Proponents of the new industry say it has breathed fresh air into a troubled economy when it was most needed.
